What is LASIK?

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, and it is a popular and effective surgical procedure used to correct refractive vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The goal of LASIK is to improve a person’s vision, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

During the LASIK procedure, a specialized laser is used to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, so that light entering the eye can be properly focused onto the retina. The reshaping of the cornea allows for improved light refraction, correcting the refractive errors and enhancing vision.

What challenges did you face with contacts and glasses before having LASIK?
I started wearing glasses in the 2nd grade and moved to contact lenses in the 5th grade. By the time I was in my teens, I was completely nonfunctional without correction. Besides the dryness from contact lenses, I told myself I didn’t mind it so much. Until I had a baby… It is a vulnerable feeling to wake in the middle of the night (multiple times)
and have to grope for your glasses to see!

How has LASIK helped you overcome these challenges and how did it improve your life?
I don’t even think about my vision anymore. I no longer have to deal with a morning and nighttime contact lens routine. Like most busy moms, I have enough on my mind without having to worry about glasses and contact lenses!

Any other comments?
Honestly, I put off having LASIK because I was nervous. But working with Dr. Garrett allowed me to see how caring and detail-oriented she was with her patients. She truly wants them to have the best possible outcome. That gave me the confidence to go for it. It was a great decision. It’s been 10 years now, but I still wish I had done it sooner.

What challenges did you face with contacts & glasses before having LASIK?  
Having small kids, it was very frustrating to wake up in the middle of the night to take care of them and not being able to see or find my glasses…all the while having a screaming baby needing care was very stressful.

How did LASIK improve your life?
Everything is better! No more stress or worry over finding my glasses in the middle of the nigh.  As a mother, getting ready for the day routine is much faster and smoother. Also, being able to wear sunglasses off the shelf is game changer!

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking of having Lasik but is unsure?
DO IT!!!! The sooner the better! It is literally the best thing I have ever done for myself. I experienced no pain and had the easiest recovery after any surgery I have ever had. I had surgery in 2022 and my vision is still perfect!

What challenges did you face with contacts and glasses before having LASIK?

I have needed glasses since college, especially when driving at night. Unfortunately, I had a terrible tendency to lose and break my glasses, and the cost of replacement adds up over time. Contacts were never a good fit for me, either; so, my wife suggested LASIK as a one-and-done solution. At the rate I was replacing lenses, the procedure would pay for itself in five years at most.

How has LASIK helped you overcome these challenges and how did it improve your life?

When I got home from the procedure, I took an hour-long nap, and immediately afterward I was shocked by my ability to read the subtitles for the movie my kids were watching—and I was more than twenty-five feet away from the screen! I had read online that some who have the procedure struggle with dry eyes, but that was not a problem for me at all. After a few weeks of precautionary measures following the procedure (ex: not rubbing my eyes), I have seen better than I can remember (again, especially at night) and have required no special measures for upkeep. 

Any other comments?

Dr. Garrett was very personable and helpful in answering all my questions thoroughly and patiently, and she does follow-up on the results of the procedure at scheduled intervals to make sure everything goes as planned. LASIK is, unquestionably, the best money I have spent on personal care in recent memory. I 100% recommend it.
